Just some recent thoughts on kindness in science
The pursuit of science is a humbling one. It is often riddled by unexpected roadblocks, failed experiments, and unexpected empirical evidence that requires a question and rethinking of theories and hypotheses. When confronted with such daunting challenges, questions should be met with encouragement and failures be treated as learning opportunities. As such, kindness becomes an essential foundation and thriving force for the establishment of a supportive research community that can foster free and meaningful exchange of ideas, encourage innovation, constructive reviews and discussions, and nurture the respectful coexistence and inclusion of diverse perspectives. This type of research culture does not only enhance the quality and rigor of the scientific work, but it also breeds scientists that are compassionate, resilient, open to forming long-lasting collaborations, and enforce a strong ethical code of conduct to protect others in the community from all forms of discrimination. Only with the practice of kindness can we successfully push the boundaries of scientific advancement by enhancing the sense of community through a shared sense of purpose, namely the pursuit of knowledge.
